Le syndrome SHINE, ou synaptopathie DLG4, est une maladie extrêmement rare causée par une mutation génétique sur le 17ème chromosome. Cette mutation affecte la production de la protéine PSD95 qui est cruciale pour le développement et le fonctionnement du cerveau par ses implications dans la force et la plasticité synaptiques. Les patients atteints du syndrome SHINE souffrent généralement de troubles du Sommeil, d’Hypotonie, de déficiences Intellectuelles, de troubles Neurologiques et d’Épilepsie, d’où le nom acronyme “SHINE”.
Bien qu’ils doivent faire face à de nombreuses difficultés dans leur vie quotidienne, nos stars SHINE sont généralement tout sourire, aiment célébrer les moindres victoires et répandent la joie partout où ils vont.
Peu après la confirmation du diagnostic de synaptopathie DLG4, un groupe de parents a commencé à travailler ensemble pour créer une communauté pour les autres familles nouvellement diagnostiquées, regrouper les informations sur la recherche et faire connaître la maladie.
La mission de la Fondation est d’améliorer la qualité de vie des enfants et des familles touchés par le syndrome SHINE en soutenant la recherche collaborative entre des professionnels de la médecine internationaux, et en encourageant une communauté de familles et la sensibilisation dans le monde entier.
En quelques années seulement, la recherche sur DLG4, la protéine PSD-95 et le syndrome SHINE a beaucoup progressé. Actuellement, des équipes de médecins et de chercheurs du monde entier travaillent à élucider l’histoire naturelle de la synaptopathie DLG4, ses effets sur les patients, ainsi qu’à développer et à tester des traitements.
Plusieurs de ces projets sont entièrement ou partiellement financés par la fondation et dépandent de notre soutien de coordination avec la communauté de patients.
